Associate Professor Takuya Nishimura (Geodesy) of Kyoto University explains
①Seawater intrudes into the gap between the Pacific and Eurasian plates.
② Seawater, estimated to be about 2,900 cubic meters, is rising off the Noto Peninsula in running water, causing displacement of a fault near 16 km below the surface.
③ The structure is such that earthquakes frequently occur near the surface.
In response, the following Prayer will be added to the fifth and subsequent prayers of the morning session of Japan Standard Time.
