- Japan’s nuclear power policy
- The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is found to be in a dangerous condition with holes at the bottom of the generator 1. Due to its decayed basis, the generator 1 is apprehended to overturn in the wake of the next major earthquake.
- The Japanese government plans to drain Fukushima Daiichi’s treated water contaminated by tritium, radioactive cesium, strontium, and many others into the Pacific Ocean within this year. The Nuclear Regulation Authority is promoting this policy even by falsely translating into Japanese the agreement paper reached in the G-7 meeting for the environment. Furthermore, the government plans to transfer the permission right to extend operation periods of nuclear power plants from the extremely loose Nuclear Regulation Authority to the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry that is on the side of promoting the nuclear power generation.
- Many specialists criticize the government’s new plan to further extend the period of old nuclear power plants saying that the policy totally neglect the lessons from the Fukushima accident. What lies behind this obsession for nuclear power plants is the so-called “nuclear village”— groups consisting of academic persons, enterprises, public organizations, mass media etc.—that have interest in nuclear power generation .
- Civil war in Sudan
Civil war is continuing in Sudan even after achieving a ceasefire agreement. In this condition, the UK government evacuated its diplomats before the civilians. Many UK and US civilians are left in Sudan, but Japan has succeeded to evacuate both diplomats and civilians.
- Russia and Ukraine
The war seems to be gradually approaching a ceasefire with the mediation of Xi Jing-ping and Macron.
