251213_In Honor of A Day to Overlook the World with the Divine Eyes
【Living by Seeing Everything as a Fading Away, Brushing Off Dust and Removing Impurities】
About 2,500 years ago, near the present-day border between Nepal and India, Gautama Siddhartha attained enlightenment, became Shakyamuni Buddha, and taught the cosmic laws to all sentient beings. Among the Buddha’s disciples was Shuri Handoku.
He was the slowest learner among the disciples, unable even to memorize a single short verse. His senior disciples constantly mocked him, saying, “You can’t even remember something like this?” “You’re useless no matter what you do,” and treated him like a mere servant.
One day, Shuri was driven out by those senior disciples. Standing under the shade of a tree outside the monastery, he began to weep. The Buddha happened to pass by and spoke to him.
Buddha: “What are you doing here?”
Shuri: “Because I am so incapable, the senior disciples have expelled me. But I cannot return home, nor can I stay here, and I have no idea what I should do.”
Buddha: “You are my disciple, and this is the home to which you should return. You may remain with me.”
Shuri: “Yes, thank you very much.”
Buddha: “Do you consider yourself a foolish person?”
Shuri: “Yes, that is what I believe.”
Buddha: “Because you know your own foolishness, you are not a fool. Therefore, there is no need to grieve. The truly foolish are those who do not recognize their own ignorance and instead imagine themselves to be wise.”
Shuri: “Master, how should someone like me advance in practice?”
Buddha: “Hmm… Shuri, look within yourself. What do you think you are good at? What is something you are capable of doing?”
Shuri: “The only thing I can think of that I can do is cleaning.”
Buddha: “Then from now on, you shall devote yourself wholeheartedly to cleaning.”
Shuri: “Yes, I understand. I will do so.”
Buddha: “When you do it, you should recite, ‘Let me sweep away the dust, let me remove the impurities.’”
Shuri: “Thank you very much. I will do as you say.”
From then on, day after day, he continued to clean every corner of the monastery. Yet no matter how much he cleaned, dust from the earth and fallen leaves accumulated again and again. Still, without giving up, he continued cleaning for decades, and one day—more than twenty years later—he suddenly realized something. “I thought I had been sweeping away dust and dirt outside my body and mind, but all of it was actually a reflection of the attachments within my heart,” he thought. “Just as dirt keeps accumulating no matter how much one cleans, people’s hearts also give rise to one attachment after another. What truly needs to be purified is the heart.”
From that moment of realization, the words he recited while cleaning changed. “Rokkon shōjō, rokkon shōjō, rokkon shōjō, rokkon shōjō…” As he repeated this chant while cleaning, one of the elder monks passing by heard him and was astonished, and immediately reported it to the Buddha. The Buddha smiled with great joy, as if it were his own accomplishment. A short time later, as he was preaching to the disciples, the Buddha addressed Shuri by name.
Buddha: “Shuri, do you enjoy cleaning?”
Shuri: “Yes, thanks to your guidance, I enjoy it very much.”
Buddha: “Good. Everyone, listen carefully. This man has attained Arhatship and opened the eye of enlightenment.”
At this, one of the senior disciples raised his voice.
Senior disciple 1: “With respect, Master, this man did not memorize scriptures or practice meditation. All he ever did was clean. How could such a person possibly attain Arhatship?”
Other senior disciples: “That’s right, that’s right.” “It makes no sense that someone like him could become enlightened.”
Buddha: “Then let me ask those who just spoke—do you find joy in living?”
At this question, they all fell silent.
Buddha: “A heart that can spend each day feeling joy, gladness, and gratitude without interruption—that is the heart of enlightenment. Through cleaning, Shuri has made that heart his own. Through his daily cleaning, he realized that the dust truly needing to be swept away was the three poisons staining his own heart—greed (ton), anger (jin), and ignorance (chi)—and he has lived striving to keep the six senses (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind) pure. Because of more than twenty years of such dedicated practice, Shuri has attained Arhatship. Finally, as I reveal the essence of enlightenment to you all, listen well: even a single line of teaching, if thoroughly mastered and rightly understood, will assuredly lead anyone to Arhatship.”
The rumor that Shuri had attained enlightenment spread rapidly, and soon people who doubted his awakening appeared as well. Therefore, to prove Shuri’s attainment, the Buddha instructed him to deliver a sermon at a convent of nuns. The nuns mocked him, saying, “What could such a fool possibly teach?” Yet as they listened to his discourse, many were deeply moved. For example, he taught them the following story.
Shuri: “Just like the monastery garden that I continued to sweep, it is essential that we also continue without interruption to sweep the human heart. This is because, unless we keep sweeping and purifying our hearts, the impurities within them will only continue to accumulate. Therefore, as long as we are alive—until the very moment we die—we must never neglect the cleansing of our hearts.”
If we apply the above story to our modern lives, we can see that the dust we truly must sweep away and the impurities we must wash off (the world we ought to make better) exist within our own hearts. We can also see that Shuri lived the very embodiment of the sayings “A hundred kinds of knowledge do not compare to a single act of true practice” and “Sincere action surpasses the understanding of myriad principles,” and that he was someone who continuously carried out the unceasing inner cleansing—the practice of purifying the six senses—that corresponds to “Pray for the World Peace, seeing it as a disappearing phenomenon.”
One who can discern such truths from the events of this world and from the movements of people is called one who has opened the eye of enlightenment. On Saturday evening, with eyes that recognize the Divine at the depth of all things, we will offer Infinite Gratitude to the movements of humanity across the Earth, to all living beings who are swept along by them, and to all of great nature, and we will send the Universal God’s light.
Program of the Day
【Opening Remarks】
NAGANO: Hello, everyone. We will now begin the evening Zoom Prayer Meeting. Today’s A Day to Cultivate the Divine Eyes is, as written in the text linked in the guidance email, a day to deeply recognize that the world we must truly improve is not this world we perceive with our five senses, but the world within our hearts; to sweep away and wash off the dust and impurities within the heart; to gaze upon the Divinity inherent in all things with a heart of harmony; and to send the Universal God’s light—the Source of Life—to humanity, to all living beings, and to great nature.
Since it is now time, we will begin with the Prayer for World Peace in Japanese and English.
1. Prayer for World Peace
NAGANO: Let’s get started.
Sekai Jin-rui ga Heiwa de ari-masu you-ni.
Nippon ga Heiwa de ari masu you-ni.
Watakushi-tachi no Ten-mei ga mattou sare masu you-ni.
Shugo-Rei-sama, arigatou gozai-masu. Shugo-Jin-sama, arigatou gozai-masu.
May peace prevail on Earth.
May peace be in our homes and countries.
May our missions be accomplished.
We thank you, Guardian Deities and Guardian Spirits.
2. Time to anchor the consciousness of divinity
NAGANO: Thank you very much. We will now enter the time to anchor the consciousness of divinity. The consciousness of divinity is the consciousness that gazes upon the world with the Divine Eyes; it is the consciousness of an enlightened state; it is the consciousness of Oneness with the Divine Self; it can also be described as the consciousness of the extinction of all delusive outflows. Please listen comfortably and in a relaxed state to what I will speak about now.
Through our unwavering practice of Pray for the World Peace, seeing it as a disappearing phenomenon, our consciousness has, at some point, naturally come to resonate with the consciousness-wave of the Guardian Spirits and Guardian Deities, leading us to awaken to the Divinity within our own physical hearts.
When we look upon the world with such eyes—eyes of the Divine Being—it becomes clear that what must truly be transformed is the human heart, and that only by reawakening Divinity within the hearts of humanity will the world of great harmony, the world of everlasting peace that we desire, come into being.
If we do not change our way of thinking and continue believing, “Russia is at fault. Israel is at fault. We must force them to stop the war,” and if we pray for peace or perform the Divine Spark IN with such a mindset, then we are participating in the same tug-of-war as the people of this world, standing in the same position as they are.
Those of us who pray for World Peace must transcend the worldly notions of who is right and who is wrong. We must firmly fix our gaze on the harmony of all life.
In the world today, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, is attempting to end the state of war by intervening between Israel and Palestine, and between Russia and Ukraine, in search of a compromise; however, what is being done is merely a continuation of the same pattern—“forcing the militarily weak to give in,” and “only the strong benefit”—which is no different from the world we have always known.
Even if force is used to suppress conflict temporarily and avoid a state of war, the hearts of people do not change. The suppressed side will inevitably experience a rebound, and sooner or later, another clash will occur.
Amid such a world, our stance—those of us who work to bring about enduring peace on Earth—is, borrowing the words of GOI-sensei, “neither right-wing nor left-wing, but harmonious fellowship,” and “a world in which the essence of life is remembered and the eternal life is recognized.”
As those who have prayed solely for the Peace of Humanity for decades, when we look upon world affairs, we deeply feel that “we must side neither with the right nor with the left, support neither justice nor injustice, but simply continue to send the Universal God’s light equally to all humankind.”
From the perspective of God, all human beings are young and earnest. At the very least, we ourselves must now graduate from that young and earnest state of humanity.
Without justice or evil, without right or left, embracing all humankind equally and guiding all to the Divine World requires that we ourselves become one with the Guardian Spirits and Guardian Deities and gaze upon the world with the consciousness of God.
We will now play music for about three minutes. Please breathe slowly and gently, sharpen the Divine Eyes, and tune yourself to the consciousness of divinity. And let us radiate Infinite Love and Gratitude to humanity, to all living beings, and to great nature.
《Time for tuning into the consciousness of divinity while listening to the music》
Thank you very much.
3. Gratitude to Nature around the World through the Divine Eye
GYOUTEN: From here, we will take this time to gaze upon the Earth through the Divine Eye and offer our gratitude to all of Nature and every living being.
Now, in 2025, we have reached a point where we can naturally send the Light of Gratitude to all beings and all events, from the Divine Perspective.
It was not an easy journey, and of course, it was not achieved by our own power alone.
It is thanks to the devotion of the Earth, the air, the water, and all of Nature, as well as the plants and living creatures. It is also through the blessings of our Guardian Spirits, Guardian Deities, the Divine Beings of the Spiritual World, and the Celestial Angels of the Universe, who have nurtured us until now.
Today, with hearts full of gratitude toward all those beings who have helped us grow, we will offer our deepest appreciation to the nature and life forms throughout the world, and send the Light of the Universal God. Let us begin.
